Apple is planning to allow software developers to use its AI models in their creations which aim to boost Apple’s AI growth, according to those with knowledge of the matter. Apple is making a Software Development Kit (SDK) and assorted frameworks that will support developers in making AI features using the large language models inside Apple Intelligence. At WWDC on June 9, 2025, Apple is to reveal the initiative to the public.
Last year, the introduction of Apple Intelligence brought about features like updating emails, grouping notifications and making image edits. Even so, releasing this new technology has met with some delays and some pundits say Apple has fallen behind Samsung because it does not yet use AI from Google on its own phones. Apple intends to narrow the gap by presenting AI models, beginning with its smaller, lightweight models that live on devices rather than the larger, cloud-based ones.
With this change, developers can blend Apple’s AI tech anywhere they wish in their apps, helping to invent new and strengthen existing AI applications on Apple. Developers could add Apple Intelligence to their apps up to now, but they were prevented from using Apple’s AI models for their own AI features.

Making the decision could increase interest in Apple Intelligence which has been seen as slow to get off the ground. Apple hopes that by helping developers make the most of AI, they can develop new and innovative apps that improve Apple’s standing in the AI industry. The approach supports Apple’s purpose of providing more tools for developers as well as a more flexible ecosystem, by processing things on the device rather than in the cloud.
As Apple prepares for WWDC, the tech world is watching closely. This move could redefine how developers interact with Apple’s AI, positioning the company as a stronger contender in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
