The domestically created E-beam technology can enable India to become a worldwide leader in the sterilization of medical devices and various radiation-related applications. India reached a significant milestone when the electron beam (E-beam) radiation technology created by a leading institute of the Department of Atomic Energy successfully sterilised 50 lakh medical devices.

According to an official from the Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RR-CAT) of the department, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, noted this achievement at the electron beam facility located near Choithram Mandi in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He remarked that this achievement has placed India among the select countries that widely utilize sophisticated indigenous radiation technology.

To make this moment unforgettable, RR-CAT Director Unmesh D Malshe presented a memento to Mohanty, the official stated. According to the official, the medical device sterilization center at this unit began operations in October 2022, and so far, 50 lakh medical devices from different companies have been sterilized at that location.

The AIC I-Hub, RRCAT's incubation center, provides electron beam irradiation services to Indian industries at competitive prices relative to conventional sterilization techniques. The 10 MeV, 6 kW electron linear accelerator at RRCAT offers meticulously regulated irradiation doses ranging from a few Grays (Gy) to several Mega Grays (MGy) for various applications, he noted.
